11/20/11 – An attitude of thanksgiving

Thanksgiving day is a day in which we, as Americans, set aside time in our busy schedules to give thanks and show gratitude. It is an unusual holiday, as it does not recognize any great person or event. Its one and only purpose is for our nation to recognize and express thanks to God for His goodness and blessings upon us. It is very appropriate that we have this day on the calendar, as we have so much to be thankful for. Our life, health, family, friends, freedom, finances, food, clothing, housing, etc… There is even a greater thing than these to be thankful for, and that is our salvation and forgiveness from sins through Christ Jesus. We also have the privilege of being part of a church family  and the gift of being brothers and sisters in the Lord. Each of us has so much to be thankful for, but sadly, many take these things for granted and have lost the attitude of thanksgiving in their lives. If we are not careful, we can easily become used to our blessings from God and, rather than be thankful, we can become discontented and ungrateful. We become complainers rather than worshippers. May we be careful of that trap the enemy sets. May we strive to live with a sense of wonder and amazement that the Lord is supplying our needs each and every day. Let us recognize our blessings and be thankful people.

Have you ever been in a predicament where it seemed no good choices were at your disposal? There are a number of terms we use to describe theses situations in our lives. We might say we are in a pinch or a jam. Another term would be we are up against a wall or between a rock and a hard place. Our predicaments might be related to our families, our jobs, our health, our finances, or even our church. They can come in many forms and situations. We can learn some helpful things about how to deal with our predicaments from seeing how Moses and the Israelites dealt with theirs.

Attention all who are 50+!

Join us this Monday, November 21st at 6:00pm for Movie & Snack Night at Johnnie & Pat Olson’s home.

We will be watching the movie “End of the Spear”, a true story about the 1956 murder of five American Christian missionaries in Ecuador. (One of the missionaries, Nate Saint, was the father of Steve Saint of Willmar.) This is an amazing story of forgiveness and redemption!

Please note that snacks only, not potluck dinner, will be served.

10/30/11 – The life and times of Moses :Part 9 “Trust and obey”

For 430 years, the Israelites had lived as foreigners and slaves in Egypt. They had been mistreated and oppressed by forced and obsessive labor. Their leader, Moses, came to Pharaoh time and time again to ask for their freedom, but time and time again the king refused to set them free. Each time the Pharaoh refused, God sent a plague. Nine different times God poured out consequences upon the Egyptians for their failure to release the Israelites. Now, the tenth and final plague is about to take place. This plague would be the worst of them all. The first born son of every Egyptian home would be affected. The Bible tells us that there was not one home in all of Egypt without someone dead in it. Finally, after this terrible and costly event, the Pharaoh agreed  to set the Israelites free.

The theme that flows in and through this story is the theme of obedience. The Pharaoh refused to obey and it caused untold suffering in his life and the life of the Egyptian people. The Israelites, however, heard the Lord’s commands through Moses and obeyed them right down to the smallest detail. As a result, they experienced a great deliverance. Obedience always pays off! The salvation process begins and ends with faith and obedience. The question for us all is ‘Are we putting our trust in the Lord and striving to walk in obedience to His will and commands?’ There’s an old hymn that says it well, “trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
