experience Lifelearning to follow Jesus in a me-centered world

Every day, the world screams at us, “You’re number one. Look out for yourself – your own comfort and happiness.” But that’s not what Jesus said. He told us to follow Him. And following Him means we’re not number one – Jesus is.

In this class, we will explore what it means to surrender to Jesus and the dynamic impact following Christ will have on our personal lives, our relationships, and our service to others.

This class will consist of four video-driven sessions by Pete Briscoe, Pastor and Author of The Surge

Session 1 – experience Life

Session 2 – Life in Christ

Session 3 – Life with Others

Session 4 – Life Expressed

10/16/11 – The life and times of Moses :Part 8 “The plagues from God”

The 10 plagues of Egypt, recorded in the book of Exodus, is one of the most well-known events from the Bible. Many people are familiar with the plagues themselves, but not everyone understands their full impact on Egypt. The plagues not only decimated Egypt both physically and economically, but more importantly, they decimated them spiritually. Why? Because each of the plagues targeted a specific Egyptian god or goddess. God used the plagues to reveal His power over the gods of Egypt. He wished to show the Pharaoh and the Egyptian people who the One True God was.

There are two major truths that we need to take to heart from this story.

First, we should take to heart that when God judges, He does a thorough job of it. God knows how and when to judge and He is perfect and just in His judgement.

Secondly, we should take to heart the fact that it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. There is coming a day of judgement for all mankind and we must take that very seriously. Our God is a jealous God and He will not tolerate us putting other gods before Him. We are called by God to serve Him first and foremost and to not allow anyone or anything to rival our relationship with Him. God did not tolerate idolatry in Egypt or Israel and He won’t tolerate it in us, either.

We must be careful to evaluate our lives and see if there is anything we are placing in our lives before God. There are many gods we can be serving, but only one God we should be serving. The plagues should teach us that God is not someone to be toyed with or manipulated. The plagues should teach us that it is a fearful thing for God to pour out His wrath upon us. God is someone we should stand in awe and fear of. He is someone we should be quick to obey and honor. When we do, He will pour out His blessing and care over us, just as He did the people of Israel in the midst of the plagues.

10/9/11 – The life and times of Moses :Part 7 “Going from bad to worse”

If you have ever had a bad day where everything seemed to go from bad to worse, then you will be able to identify with Moses. He had accepted the call of God and returned to Egypt to lead the Hebrew people out of slavery and into the promised land. When he and his brother, Aaron, arrived there, they summoned a meeting with the Jewish leaders where they revealed to them all the words that God had given to them and the signs of God’s power. The people believed and threw their support behind them. Moses then set up a meeting with the Pharaoh, where he would share the message of God with him. This is when the day turned from bad to worse. Things did not go as Moses and the Jewish leaders had hoped. The Pharaoh became very angry and poured his wrath out on the people by increasing their work load and increasing their misery. The Pharaoh had no intention of letting the people go or honoring God’s demands. Moses’ natural response was probably to run back to Midian and live out his life once again as a shepherd, but God reassured him of the promises that He had made and that they would come to fruition. Just like Moses, we too, tend to focus on the difficulties of the moment instead of the power and presence of God. Until our eyes are fixed on the Lord, we will not be able to endure those days in our lives that go from bad to worse. May we recognize who God is. Let us trust in His promises, just a Moses did. What God did in his life, He wishes to do in ours. The path may not always be smooth and easy, but our God is faithful and He will do what He said He will do.
