Mature Christians – We ought to…

…model our lives after Jesus.

…model true holiness.

…live transparent lives.

Young Christians – Don’t wait for a mature Christian to model true Christianity to you. If you need to, show the more mature Christians how to do it.

9/18/11 – The life and times of Moses :Part 6 “Who are you calling, Lord? Not me?”

We all, at times, like to make excuses, and some excuses are better than others. We have excuses for why we missed work or school. We have excuses for why we are late in paying our bills. We have excuses for why we got off our diet and exercise program. We have excuses for our spiritual lives, as well. We have a lot of excuses for a lot of things in our lives. Most excuses are not very good ones and may we understand that God is not interested in our excuses when He directs and guides our lives. Moses’ story reveals to us that he was one who made a lot of excuses when God called on him, even though God gave him many assurances that He would go with Moses and provide and protect him. Like most of us, Moses feared failure, ridicule, and rejection. He was afraid he would look foolish in front of the very people God was calling him to rescue and lead out of Egypt. God was patient with Moses and understood his concerns and fears. God gave Moses the assurance that He would go with him in this calling and that He would lead and guide him in the way he was to go. Moses learned that he had to simply put his trust in God and stop relying on his own strengths and talent. We, too, must learn these lessons in our lives. We must learn that when serving the Lord, we must trust in Him and not ourselves. God promises to be with us in and through all things. He will provide His empowerment and guidance to us in the journey He sets before us. Let us walk in faith and confidence, knowing that truth.

Moses had spent the last 40 years in obscurity in the desert, tending his father-in-law’s sheep. At this point in his life, he probably felt that he had mess up so much in life that God would never call on him for any major assignment again. But Moses was so wrong! God had great plans for the next 40 years of his life. The Bible is full of accounts of people who had made mistakes and failures, and yet God chose to use those failures for His glory. Why do you suppose that is the case? Because God wants to demonstrate to all mankind that what matters is not the person, but the God behind the person. We are all jars of clay and we have cracks and defects, but it is not the pot that matters but what fills the pot. God fills us with His power and righteousness and He enables us in our weaknesses. God, in His grace and kindness, uses imperfect people to dispense His message and accomplish His perfect will. Will we choose to come as we are and allow God to have His way in our lives?

9/4/11 – The life and times of Moses :Part 4 “The school of hard knocks”

Everyone makes mistakes at one time or another. We have all said things we should not have said; we have all acted in ways we later regret. Some mistakes come with little consequences and some come with large consequences. No matter the mistakes, we often wish we had a big eraser where we could remove them from our lives and start over. We are all sinners and we fall short at times. God knows this about us and yet He loves us and is gracious to us. God is perfect and makes no mistakes like mankind does, but God is realistic and knows our shortcomings. He not only expects us to make mistakes, He forgives and allows us to learn and grow from our failures. Many of life’s greatest lessons are learned the hard way and from the school of hard knocks. Moses was a man who made his share of mistakes in life, but God did not give up on him. He used those mistakes to teach him, train him, mold him into the man He wished him to become. May we know and proclaim that our failure is never the end of God’s love for us. They do not mean He cannot still use us. We never know how God can use our failures and hardships, but through faith, we can know that He can and will.
