12/26/10 – What if Jesus had not been born?

What if Jesus had not been born and lived His life on this earth? What if the first Christmas never happened? No virgin birth, no baby wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger, no shepherds receiving the angelic new of the child’s birth, no wise men making the long journey from the east in order to give their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. If Jesus had not been born, the world would be a much different place. Because of the birth of the Savior, we have been shown the personality, love, and faithfulness of God. Through Jesus, we experience Immanuel “God with us”. God did not have to come to us, but He chose, out of His own free will, to do so because He knew there was no other way to make the world right. Without the birth of Jesus, we could never have a personal relationship with God or become children of God. Jesus came to earth as a human child so that we could become a child of God. What impact has He made on your life?

12/19/10 – When Jesus became like us

The natural tendency for parents is to take care of their children. We strive to make their lives pleasant and comfortable. We make sure they eat right and dress accordingly. We make sure they get educations so that one day they can lead productive lives as adults. We make great effort to give them a good and happy life. When one considers the life of Christ, you see a reversal of those normal parental actions in how God treated His beloved son. Jesus was demoted from being in heaven and being worshipped by the angels, to instead being born in a dirty stable. Those who first worshipped Him, here on earth, were lowly shepherds. Jesus left much to come to us and show God’s great love to us. The son of God came down to earth and became sin so that you and I could become righteous and sinless before God. May we recognize that Jesus is the greatest Christmas gift that anyone will ever receive.

12/12/10 – The hope found in Christmas

What does the word ‘hope’ mean to us? When we hope for something, we are looking forward to that which may come to pass in our lives. For example, we hope our children will do well in school, we hope our job evaluation goes well and that we might get a raise, we hope a recipe turns out well. When we hope for something, we wish with a positive expectation that it will become a reality. Hope is a part of life; it keeps us all going each day and motivates us to continue onward into the future. Hope and faith have much in common. When we have faith, we believe that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He says He will do. We trust and believe, through faith, that we will see the fruit of what we hope for. During this advent season, we await and prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. His first coming changed the world forever. His life and teachings affected the world in a greater way that any other and give to millions great hope. Soon He is returning again and this time not as a baby in a manger, but as a conquering king! We have a hope of an eternity spent with Him. Christmas is a time where we are reminded of God’s great love for us and a time where we recognize the world’s great hope.

11/28/10 – A call to rest

We live in a modern day rat race. The motto of out lives seems to be busyness and over-commitment. Because of these life styles, we have fast food restaurants on every corner, quick print shops, faster and faster computers, one-hour photo booths, instant microwave food, instant messenger, etc. Our society is moving at 100 mph! Busy is the hallmark of our times. Why do we do it to ourselves? Why do we fill our days with so much activity and commitments? The rat race we live in is all geared around what we do and what we have, but God is more interested in who we are. He will not ask of us at the judgement how busy we were, but instead He will ask us if we strived to be like Jesus. We must find times of rest in order to restore our physical and spiritual beings. We must make an effort to get away from all the noise and confusion of life and rest before the Lord. The enemy of our souls wishes to distract us and throw us off course. May we be aware and make the effort necessary to slow down and stay in tune with God.
