4/25/10 – Sermon Series: The Jewish Feasts – “The Feast of Weeks” Pentecost
The Feast of Weeks is always celebrated on the 50th day after passover. The feast of weeks was the day on which the first fruit offerings of the summer wheat crop were brought into the temple to be offer unto God. On the day of this feast, people from every tribe and nation gathered in the city of Jerusalem to celebrate and worship together. This feast was a symbolic festival that pointed to the coming of Christ’s Holy Spirit and the birthday of the new testament church.
According to the scriptures, Jesus spent forty days in a post-resurrection ministry. After that time, He told His followers that He must leave and return to the Father. He also told them that He was gong to send to them a helper and comforter; one who would come alongside them in His absence. They were then informed to go to Jerusalem and await this promised one. The disciples waitedas they had been told and exactly ten days later, on the day of Pentecost, the Spirit of God descended upon those first century believers! Thousands were ministered to and saved on that day! This gift and outpouring was for all mankind and not just for those present on that day. This empowerment gives you and I the ability and strength to live out our christian faith in a great and glorious way and to be witnesses to all the world. With the Holy Spirit’s help, we are conformed into the likeness of Christ our Savior.
